    Stammering:
    causes and the solution

    What is

    stammering?

Stammering is a symptom of an emotional state that affects people with a higher than normal sense of sensibility. Stammering is a disorder of emotional origin that comes from nervous tension.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines stammering as a disorder of the rhythm of the language in which the individual knows exactly what he wants to say but is unable to do so due to repetitive involuntary or interruptions in the sound. Stammering, therefore, is not a clinical problem. It is a speech disorder of a nervous origin without alteration of the organs of speech.

    The cause:

    emotional tension

The moment you start talking is a source of great tension for a stammerer. This tension is ignored by those who do not have the disorder and cannot understand it. Scheider’s thesis is that emotional stress causes stammering. The psychological origin of stammering is also supported by Martin Schwartz in “Stuttering Defeat”.

The French speech therapist Suzanne Borrell- Maisonner, considered one of the greatest stuttering therapists, says that emotional weakness is the typical characteristic of stutterers. The causes that lead a person to stutter are therefore attributable to the apprehension of an emotional person.

    What happens when

    you stammer?

When the stammerer goes through a situation that causes him anxiety, tension, or strong agitation, for example at a job interview, speaking in public or when he talks to strangers, the respiratory and phonatory systems are uncoordinated.

Therefore, the respiratory organs are not in harmony with the mouth and the larynx that generate the word. Therefore it is necessary to rebalance the respiratory and the phonatory apparatus.

    The course

    how it works

This course is different from others because it is a course of the re-education of speech; The aim of the course is to re-educate speech which for many years has been uncorrected in many aspects.
Rhythm is one of the most important aspects undertaken during the course. Because of their blocks, stammerers do not speak in a rhythmical way. Speaking with insufficient air in their lungs is the main feature of stammerers; others, instead, try to speak during the inhalation causing apnea. People will learn to speak all over again.

    Duration

    of the course

The course lasts 5 days ( Tuesday 10 am – Saturday 5 pm). On the last day of the course each student has to speak in front of an audience to demonstrate that they are now able to control their speech with the method they have learned andit is very moving to see the great change in their lives. After the course they have to continue practising the technique until it becomes the only way of speaking. For this reason the school organizes regular booster sessions one day a month for one year to enable students to refresh the technique. It is always possible for people, who has already attended the course, to come back to refresh the technique and help the new students to work on the method. People always ask: “how long does it take to overcome stammering? Well, there is no specific time; it depends on how much time people spend to work on their speech.

    Who

    is it for?

It is aimed at children aged 8 and over. For children under this age stammering can disappear spontaneously. On the other hand, for older children stammering can become chronic and needs to be treated.

    The solution

We have realized that the cause of stammering is not a medical problem. Therefore, stammering should be approached with a specialist treatment that goes beyond normal clinical care: The Speakeasy programme which is based on the techniques of modulation normally associated with singing.

    The first

    steps

During the initial stages, students learn to bind the syllables together in a rhythmic way. The exercises comprise all the syllables existing in our language and they are modulated to produce a rhythm, so that the last one is connected to the first syllable of the following word.

    Progressive elimination

    of stammering

In the next stage, you begin to formulate longer phrases with a complete meaning with the help of the rules learned in the first part of the course and with the indispensible support of reading, the language tends to become smooth and fluent, eliminating all traces of stammering and embarrassing distortion.

Reading allowed is considered essential because it allows the student to focus and practice solely on the assimilation of the new rhythm of speech without the extra effort of having to think about what to say.

From the first days, students will put into practice what they learn in everyday situations such as: asking for information, making phone calls, talking to strangers.
